About Riverside

Riverside is the southern part of East Providence, with its own ZIP code, 02915. It borders Barrington to the south, Narragansett Bay to the west, and the Runnins River and Seekonk, Massachusetts, to the east. It was called Cedar Grove until 1878, and many streets south of Lincoln Avenue are named after trees.

Crescent Park, a 10 acre city park on Bullocks Point Avenue, sits between the bay and the 1895 Looff Carousel, a National Historic Landmark with 62 hand-carved figures. The East Bay Bike Path passes through Riverside Square, under Bullocks Point Avenue in a tunnel and past Haines State Park.

Yard waste in Riverside

  • East Providence collects leaves and yard waste from April 1 to December 15.
  • Use paper bags, or barrels with the city's yard debris labels.
  • Labels are available at City Hall (145 Taunton Ave.), the Engineering Division and the Public Works office at 60 Commercial Way, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If your yard faces the bay, ask the crew whether a second leaf visit is included, and ask about salt-tolerant plants when beds are cut back.

Trees over sidewalks and streets

  • Owners of property next to a public street must keep tree branches trimmed at least 8 feet above sidewalks and 12 feet above streets, and clear of street lights, signs and sightlines.
  • Trees on the street, in parks or other public places need a permit from the city forester before anyone plants, prunes, removes or sprays them.

Late fall and winter, once leaves are down, is a common time for pruning. If the tree is between the sidewalk and the street, check with the city before a crew cuts.
