About Rumford
Rumford is the northern section of East Providence, ZIP code 02916, with 8,350 residents in 2020. It borders Seekonk, Massachusetts, to the east, Pawtucket to the north and the Ten Mile River to the south. It has been part of Rhode Island since 1862, and it is named for the Rumford Chemical Works, where Rumford Baking Powder was made.
The Rumford Historic District, centered where Greenwood Avenue, Pawtucket Avenue and Pleasant Street meet, traces back to 1643, when settlers laid out the village center of Rehoboth on a level plain inside the river bend. It includes Hunt's Mills on the Ten Mile River, with its dam and old pumping station. The National Register file calls the plain "perhaps the largest expanse of flat tableland in New England", quoting historian Richard Le Baron Bowen.
The district's history runs from about 1700 through the suburban subdivisions of the early 1950s, so old village houses and mid-century house lots sit close together.

Street trees need a permit
In East Providence, planting, pruning, cutting, removing or spraying any tree on a street, in a park or on other public land needs a permit from the city forester. Trees on your own lot are yours to care for, but you still have to keep branches 8 feet above the sidewalk and 12 feet above the street.
Before a crew trims the tree between the sidewalk and the curb, find out if it is a public tree.

Snow season
- Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours after snow stops.
- Snow cannot be thrown onto the street, the sidewalk or another owner's land.
- Penalties: a written warning, then $25, then $75, and the city may clear it and charge you.
- In the February 2024 storm, Kimberly Rock Field on Ferris Ave. was one of the city's parking-ban lots. Lots are announced storm by storm.
Rumford and Darlington in Pawtucket are linked by a 2.2 mile trail that runs through Slater Memorial Park to the Kimberley Rock Athletic Complex in Rumford.
